She recorded the song at the Jungle City and Oven Studios in New York City and also at The Record Plant studios in Los Angeles.
The idea for the song came from the singer's new life as a wife of Swizz Beatz and as a mother of their son, Egypt.

The single received the critics' acclaim, whom described it as a "booming anthem", a "sweeping ballad". The critics also praised the singer's "trademark soaring vocals".
The music video was released on October 19, 2012 and it was directed by English music video director, Sophie Muller.
Mary Poppins presumably was a key source of inspiration for the music video, especially for the magic scenes in the clip.
An "Inferno remix" was also filmed and it was published on VEVO on November 2, 2012.
A different third version of the video was released in Japan, the next year, in January 2013.
Girl On Fire was first performed at the MTV Video Music Awards ceremony from 2012, which took place at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles.
It has also been performed live at the 2012 Summer Olympics and also at the iTunes Festival, as well as at the MTV Europe Music Awards and on the talent show The X Factor.
The single reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also certified three times platinum in Australia, two times platinum in Canada, and platinum in countries like Germany, New Zealand, Denmark, Mexico and Italy.
