On May 7 the same year, the song reached position 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. It stayed for two months in the Top 40 chart.
It also peaked at the first position on the Canadian RPM Adult Contemporary. On the year-end chart in 1983, the song got the 95th position.

The first cover was in 1995 by R&B singer Roberta Flack. She recorded the song for the 995 American romance film directed by Forest Whitaker titled Waiting to Exhale. The song was featured in the movie but not on the official soundtrack album.
In 2003, Erik Santos along with Marinel Santos did a duet of Bishop’s song. It was featured in the Filipino primetime drama series produced and aired by ABS-CBN with the same name as the song, It Might Be You.
K A R Y Y N and Julian Wass also did a cover of the song in 2013 for the comedy-drama film The Pretty One’s closing credits.
The last known cover of It Might Be You was performed in 2015 by Filipino singer and actor Michael Pangilinan. His version was featured on the soundtrack of the Filipino romantic drama film directed by Mae Cruz-Alviar titled Everyday, I Love You.
The song was featured on the soundtrack of a 1982 American comedy film directed by Sydney Pollack, starring Dustin Hoffman, titled Tootsie.
