Sherlock is the name of a crime drama that aims to adapt the character of writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, namely Sherlock Holmes, into a new contemporary scene of detective stories.
Being a British TV show produced for BBC, it has been filmed mainly in Cardiff, Wales.
A show created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Doctor Watson, the series have been sold to over 200 territories, becoming since 2001 the UK’s most popular drama series for its third season.
Getting lots of praises and even nominations for awards such as BAFTAs, Emmys or Golden Globe, it has even won a couple of them. The soundtrack for Sherlock has been written by David Arnold and Michael Price.
In this article, we present to you the main theme for BBC’s great and successful show and its sheet music.
David Arnold, being an English film composer known for the five "James Bond" films or other major titles such as "Independence Day", "Godzilla" or "Stargate", received a Grammy for Best Instrumental Composition Written for a Motion Picture or for Television for Independence Day.
Also known for collaborating with artists such as Bjork, Kaiser Chiefs, Massive Atack, Natasha Bedingfield (just to name a few), he is also an ambassador for aid agency CARE International in the UK and a fellow of the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors.
Also winning two Ivor Novello Awards, one for Best International Film Score for "The World Is Not Enough" and one for a BASCA Fellowship in 2005, Arnold is one of the most suited English composers for a series such as Sherlock.
We are happy that he has been chosen to compose the show’s soundtrack.
Michael Price is a composer and music editor. He is also producing or arranging musical works.
An experienced and award-winning composer, he has worked for over 30 music studios and working on lots of film scores in London, Los Angeles or Prague. While also doing concerts in New York, Berlin, San Francisco or Geneva, he worked on the "The Lord Of The Rings" trilogy. He also won an award in 2001 for "The Fellowship Of The Ring", a MPSE Golden Reel Award to be more specific.
The main theme for BBC’s Sherlock is a simple, yet mystifying instrumental song, mainly composed of acute piano keys that take you to a surreal, mysterious place.
Being a well suited song for detective stories and similar to the ones used in the Sherlock Holmes movies, we think the song is well suited to be featured here.
We hope you will be able to appreciate this interesting soundtrack. If you would like anything else featured on the website, let us know via the Request page.
