Don't Play That Song (You Lied) is a song released in 1970 by the famous Aretha Franklin.
American soul and R&B singer and record producer Benjamin Earl Nelson released the first version of the song in 1962.
King’s wife Betty Nelson with help wrote the song from Turkish-American businessperson, songwriter and philanthropist Ahmet Ertegun.
Ben King’s version of the song peaked at position number 2 on the U.S. R&B singles chart and number 11 on the pop chart.
In 1970, Aretha Franklin covered King’s song for the nineteenth studio album, Spirit in the Dark.
The album was published by Atlantic records in the same year. Her version had a little more success than King’s one, reaching number 1 and holing the top position for five consecutive weeks on the R&B charty. It also reached number 11 on the Pop music chart…the same as King’s version.
Aretha Franklin wasn’t the only one who covered the song Don't Play That Song (You Lied). Multuple artists like Keith Locke and The Quests, Peppino di Capri, Adriano Celentano and Mariah Carey released their own interpretations.
The song itself is a sad one, speaking about hurtful memories of a couple. This can be seen in the following opening lyrics:
Don't play that song for me
'Cause it brings back memories
The days that I once knew
The days that I spent with you
