It is considered one of the classic verismo operas, and the most successful one.
It opened the evening of 17 May 1890 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome.
The opera was changed by Pietro Mascagni, setting the music to a new libretto.
The famous Intermezzo is played in the opera at the time when the square is empty, the villagers come out of the church to watch the action.
