The inspiration for "Lean On Me" came from Bill Withers’s own childhood, in Slab Fork, West Virginia, where he experienced very poor living standards.
Withers wrote the song in Los Angeles, as reminiscence from the previous strong community ethic, which he missed.

It is often played at charity events, such as at the 2010 Hope For Haiti earthquake relief telethon. The single was featured in the films "Dead Is Dead", "Lean On Me", "Muppets Tonight", "Martin", "The Simpson" and others. It was also performed by Mary J Blige at the "We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration at The Lincoln Memorial".
