"Magic" is a song from the British band Coldplay.
It's part of the band's sixth album, named "Ghost Stories", which was released in 2014. The song was recorded by the members in 2013 and it was written by Guy Berryman, Chris Martin, Johnny Buckland and Will Champion.
They started recording it in North London, England, at The Beehive and at The Bakery studios. It's the same studios where the band recorded "Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends", from 2008 and "Mylo Kyloto", from 2011. Guy Berryman created the bass riff from the beginning of the song.
"Magic" was produced by the band and Daniel Green, Rik Simpson and Paul Epworth. The track was released on March 3rd, 2014 through Parlophone. The single art was created by the Czech artist Mila Furstova. In terms of composition, the song contains "dusty bass riff" and a "muffled snare" which are repeated through the song. It also features an organ and a synth beat. Martin sings in falsetto.
The music video, which was directed by Jonas Akerlund also features the actress Zhang Ziyi. A tribute to silent films it's presented as a monochrome silent film. It contained mimicking from the early 20th century silent films such as the opening credit sequence. The narrative part is similar to the movie "The Prestige", from 2006, having "gripping" elements. The action takes place in traveling circus.
The music video received positive reviews and it was described as "an entertaining video", "vivid" and "a literal interpretation of what we've all come to expect from a 1920s side-show attraction".
"Magic" also received positive feedback from the music critics. Rolling Stone named it "a return to form" and that it "does hint a few new tricks up the band's sleeve". About.com rated it 4.5 stars out of 5. The song was nominated at the World Music Awards for "World's Best Song".
The song was covered by Brandy, You Me At Six, Jacob Banks, Rita Ora and others.
The single sold more than 8 million copies in Spain where it was also certified platinum, 2.6 million copies in Denmark, where it was certified platinum, in Australia it was certified double platinum, triple platinum in Italy and gold in the United Kingdom, Canada and Switzerland.
"Magic" was number one on the US Adult Alternative Songs, number 14 on the Billboard Hot 200, number 3 on the US Hot Rock Songs, and number six un the US Rock Airplay and and US Alternative Songs chart.
