"Safe and Sound" is a part of the soundtrack for "The Hunger Games (Songs from District 12 and beyond)", performed by Taylor Swift.
Written by Swift along with Joy Williams, John Paul White and T-Bone Burnett in the summer of 2011, it was released in the US on December 26, 2011.
Later the song made it to the BBC Radio 1st playlist. "Safe and Sound" is a melancholic acoustic ballad and a combination of alternative country and folk music, totally opposed to the country pop Swift would normally sing. After the release of the movie in 2012, the soundtrack was very well received by the critics.
This particular track was highly appreciated because of Swifts' interpretation and "the simplicity of the music".
Jody Rosen (Rolling Stone magazine) wrote that this is Swift's "prettiest ballad".
In a review of "The Hunger Games: Songs from District 12 and Beyond", All Music called it "the most crucial" track. The free Safe and Sound piano sheets live up to their expectations.
There were also not so promising reviews to the song, one for instance is Darren Franiches (Entertainment Weekly). In his opinion, the lyrics are not that impressive, and neither is Swifts voice. In addition, he claimed that the ballad is less like a victory chant and more of a funeral dirge.
On the first week after it has been released, "Safe and Sound" sold well over 100 thousand copies in digital format and entered the Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart at number 19.
On the Billboard Hot 100, the single oscillated from the 30th, to the 71st and then to the 56th position. After being in the list for eleven weeks, "Safe and Sound" rose to number 35.
Until November 2014, it had sold nearly 2 million copies in the United States alone and was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
The single was also included on the Canadian Hot 100 chart at No. 31, on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart at No. 38.
More successful in New Zeeland, Swift's ballad peaked at number 11 on the New Zealand Singles Chart for five whole weeks.
Overall, the song was nominated at the 2012 Country Music Association Awards for Musical Event of the Year, for Collaborative of the Year in that year at CMT Music Awards, for Best Original Song at the 70th Golden Globe Awards (2013), for Best Country Duo/Group Performance at the 2013 Grammy Awards and it was the winner of the Best Song Written for Visual Media award.
