"The Little Mermaid" is a tale written originally by Hans Christian Andersen, a Danish writer.
It has been published originally in the year 1837, but since then has been used and remaked. Animated films have been created, as well as adaptations for musical theaters.
The year 1872 meant the first English translation for this fairy tale. H. P. Paull was the man to thank for. The story and idea of "The Little Mermaid" has been transitioned into an opera piece, titled "Rusalka". Dvorak was the music composer for this opera and its debut was in the year 1901, in Prague.
The year 1905 was the year of a symphonic poem by Alexander von Zemlinsky. The composer from Austria titled his poem that lasted 40 minutes "Die Seejungfrau", which translates to "The Mermaid".
Edward Sheldon wrote a play in 1914, titled "The Garden of Paradise". Sheldon’s inspiration is said to have come from the original Andersen tale. In 1952, the movie "Hans Christian Andersen" incorporates a version of the story, expressed through a ballet scene. Germain Tailleferre has written another version for the opera.
The French composer’s work was adapted by Philippe Soupault and the opera was called "La Petite Sirene".
"The Little Mermaid" made it to the comic book world as well, first in the 50s period. "Classics Illustrated Junior" made a version of the story publicly available. Also, in the comic book genre, a manga by Osamu Tezuka titled "Angel’s Hill" was released as a remake of Andersen’s story. In the Spanish film "Fantasia…3", it was part of the first segment. The movie was released in 1966. That same year, the story was included on the animated film "The Daydreamer". Hayley Mills was the voice of the main character, the mermaid.
In 1968, the Soviet animated film "The Little Mermaid" appeared. In 1976, Bulgaria and USSR worked together to create "Rusalochka". The actress that played the mermaid was called Vyctoriya Novikova. A Czech version appeared that same year, called "Mala morska vila". The mermaid was played by Miroslava Safrankova.
The year 1989 meant the appearance of the Disney movie "The Little Mermaid", followed by a series for television. In 2000, a follow-up on the story came out from Walt Disney, being called "The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea". The year 2008 provides another side to the story with the film "The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning".
