Written by composer Stephen Schwartz, "For Good" is part of the musical Wicked (The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz).
The musical is narrated from the perspective of the witches of the Land of Oz, and, the song "For Good" is the duet between Elphaba and Glinda, who performs it towards the end of the musical.
Also known as "Because I Knew You" or "Changed For Good", they sing it as the farewell message to each other.
A Grammy Award winner in 2005 (Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album), the album was included in the Billboard 200 Chart in 2003 (at no. 125 initially and went upwards until it became no. 77 in 2011).
The Wicked musical contains most of the songs in the musical and has received many positive reviews and great commercial success with registered sales of nearly 2 and a half million copies in the U.S. until February 2014.
The album was certified platinum by the RIAA in 2006 and then double platinum four years later, on November 8, 2010.
It was produced by Stephen Schwartz with the help and contribution of Frank Filipetti, Jill Dell'Abate, Jason Spears, Justin Shturtz, Jason Stasium and Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound in New York City.
The play is based on the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, by Gregory Maguire.
The first time it was ever performed was on May 28, 2003 at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco. It officially opened on June 10, 2003 and obtained positive reviews.
The writer of the song, Stephen Schwartz, said that he considers it one of the best songs he has ever written.
He explained that he named the song after having a talk with the book writer Winnie Holzman.
She had the idea that the main message of the last musical piece in the show should be that the leading characters had changed each other for good, that they will be seeing each other for the last time.
That was the way that he decided about the title. As for the content, he used his daughter's approach to the idea of saying goodbye to her best friend and built the text on that.
