Symphony No. 2 in E minor, Op. 27 was written in the years 1906 and 1907.
It is one of the greatest symphonies in history, written Russian composer, virtuoso pianist, and conductor of the late Romantic period, Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff.
The Symphony was first played on the 8th of February 1908.
Well known for conducting his own work, Sergei Rachmaninoff was the conductor of his masterpiece when it was first premiered in Saint Petersburg.
Symphony No. 2 in E minor, Op. 27 is an hour long piece of art which was dedicated by Rachmaninoff to Russian composer, teacher, theorist, author, and pupil of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Sergei Taneyev.

Symphony No. 2 in E minor, Op. 27 was composed to be played with a full orchestra, including: 3 flutes (the 3rd doubling on piccolo), 3 oboes (the 3rd doubling on cor anglais), 2 clarinets in A and Bâ™, bass clarinet in A and Bâ™, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, glockenspiel, and strings.
In 1906 and 1907, Sergei Rachmaninoff already had a couple of session at the Imperial Opera at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow as the conductor of the orchestra.
The original manuscript of the symphony was considered lost until the year 2004, when it was discovered by in a private collector’s home.
After being autheniticated, it was loaned to the British Library for an undetermined period of time.
Ten years later, in May 2014, it was auctioned and sold for more than 1.2 million pounds.
Parts of the symphony were used for the soundtrack and promotional material for 2014 film Birdman.
During the years, Rachmaninoff work was played and conducted multiple times throughout the world.
