"Cancer" is part of My Chemical Romance's third studio album, "The Black Parade".
It also contained the singles "Famous Last Words", "Welcome to the Black Parade", "Teenagers" and "I Don't Love You".
It was produced by Rob Cavallo and it focuses around the character of "The Patient". It features gothic rock influences, glam rock, punk rock, classical rock and pop music.
The album has been influenced by big names like Freddie Mercury, The Smashing Pumpkins, Pink Floyd and David Bowie's "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars", which was released in 1972.
Just like most of the songs on the album, "Cancer" focuses on the death of "The Patient" and the vision of death.
The song has been performed live in Mexico City by the band members which were dressed "The Black Parade". The costumes were similar to those of The Beatles, from 1967. The album was number two on the UK Albums Chart, and it also received a platinum certification from the RIAA, as it sold more than 1 000 000 copies in The United States.

The album was produced by Geoff Rickley and it was promoted through MySpace and PureVolume. The band later signed with Reprise Records and recorded "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge", which was released in 2004.
The album featured songs like "The Ghost of You", "Thank You for the Venom" or "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)". The following year, My Chemical Romance embarked on the "Taste of Chaos Tour" and also served as the opening act on Green Day's tour "American idiot". In 2006, the band released their, "Life on the Murder Scene".
