I See Fire is a song which was especially written, performed and also produced by Ed Sheeran for the movie The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug.
The singer was discovered by Peter Jackson, in 2013 while he was looking for an artist to compose the ending credit for the movie.
A fan of Tolkien and Peter Jackson, Sheeran decided to write, compose and produce the song. After reading the book and watching the movie at Park Road Post, the singer started to write the lyrics and record the instrumentation.
As a first for the artist, he played the piano by himself through overdubbing.
Ed Sheeran commented that
I got the chance to produce and play all the instruments on it apart from the cello and I managed to learn the violin for a day". Later on, during the production, cello parts were added by Nigel Collins while Pete Cobbin mixed it at Park Road Studios.
The folk song has a relatively long duration, of five minutes and it was published in collaboration with WaterTower Music and Decca Records label.
Ed Sheeran is the one who single handled composed and arranged the vocals, percussion, guitar, mixing and violin. Nigel Collins helped with the cello, Kirsty Whalley and Pete Cobbin with the mixing and Miles Showell with mastering it.
