The song was released under the umbrella of Atlantic and Warner Records. To the writing of "Rather Be" contributed Jack Patterson, James Napier and Nicole Marshall.

The song's production was handled by Grace Chatto and Jack Patterson.

In common time, the song is performed in the key of G? minor and at a light tempo of 121 beats per minute.

Piano, vocals, video game-style synth blips and a violin are included in the single's composition.

The single was first aired on the 4th of December 2013, when DJ Zane Lowe from BBC Radio 1 announced it as the Hottest Record in the World.
