"Lady Madonna" is a single by the British rock band The Beatles, produced by George Martin and recorded in London at the EMI Studios.
Getting released in March 1968, the song was credited to the Lennon-McCartney duo and was released back to back with "The Inner Light". In the United Kingdom, the label that featured the single was Parlophone, while in the USA it got released by Capitol Records.
"Lady Madonna" has been featured on an album in 1970, when it got included on the "Hey Jude" compilation. Being a rock and roll song, it has been the product of McCartney’s inspiration, ranging from the jazz song "Bad Penny Blues" to the style of Fats Domino. In 1968, the single has actually been covered by Fats Domino.
While McCartney started the piano basics for the song and just began to work on the lyrics, trying to convey a working woman’s perspective of life over a week of work, Lennon is featured as aiding with the lyrics, but he remained modest about his contribution. "Lady Madonna" was recorded in five takes, starting from an initial number of three takes, McCartney on the piano and Ringo Starr drumming and brushing.
The song also included a tenor saxophone, Ronnie Scott being a special feature guest on the song, the later versions included on "Anthology 2" and "Love" using an extended array of his sax solo. Their own new label titled Apple Records included the song in different variants on their albums, even including a remake titled "An Old Lady in New Clothes", which got featured on the "Chaos and Creation at Abbey Road" DVD. Live versions of the song are included on "Wings over America, Paul is Live", "Back in the U.S." and "Back in the World".
The single has also been included on the Apple Records releases, from which we remind "1967-1970" from 1973, "20 Greatest Hits" from 1982, "Past Masters, Volume Two" from 1988 and "1" from 2000. A remix for "Lady Madonna" has been used by Cirque du Soleil on their show titled "Love". Other cover versions include artists such as Assembly of Dust, Aretha Franklin, Barry Gibb, Richie Havens, Paul Mauriat, Buck Owens, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, Phoenix, Rajaton, Carl Tjader, Elvis Presley and Caetano Veloso.
"Lady Madonna" has initially charted at the top of the UK charts for more than 10 days, while in the US it started off at rank 23 on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching as high as fourth place.
