A masterpiece of the songs belonging to the New Zealand- Australian band Crowded House, "Don't Dream It's Over" was written by Neil Finn, one of the founders of the band, released in 1986, being included from their self-titled debut album.

But Crowded House was happy to achieve even more appreciation, as it was the moment in May 2001, when APRA, the Australian Performing Rights Association qualified their song "Don't Dream It's Over" as being the second best New Zealand songs of all the time and seventh on the Australian list.
Another thing that was appreciated regarding the song was represented by the video, directed by Alex Proyas, who created some special effects surrounding Finn who was in an old house, performing the song with his voice and guitar. The video received a nomination for Best Group Video and Best Direction at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards and got the Best New Artist award.
