"Lay Me Down" is the debut single by Sam Smith, a British new name that has become popular in the Soul and R&B genre since 2013.
Released in the UK on February the 15th 2013, the song became the lead single for Sam’s album "In the Lonely Hour", his debut studio album.
Available in the UK and Ireland as three different digital versions(original version, acoustic version and music video version), "Lay Me Down" has ranked the UK Singles Charts on place number 134 and, once included on his album, went as up as place number 46.
Written by the singer alongside Elvin Smith and Jimmy Napes, the song has been announced in the beginning of 2015 as the sixth single from his album, Sam seeing necessary to record a new version for the song, working with the same producers as the first version ones.
Initially in 2013 with a music video that showed Sam and a bunch of friends in a casino, it has been removed when the rework began, the new one replacing it. The present video has been recorded in a church, it presents Sam staying at the side of a person’s coffin, the video’s flashbacks also showing that the person was someone Sam had married in the same church.
A scene with Sam mourning the death of his husband is also shown, as a return to the present.
Released for Capitol Records and Method Records, the song has peaked the US Billboard Hot 100 at rank 58, the Adult Top 40 at place 31 and the Mainstream Top 40 charts at 36. Moderate success has also presented itself around the world, the song ranking 50th in Australia, 49th in Canada and 37th in New Zealand.
